How does the price of dog grooming work?

The time spent grooming your dog is essential to his appearance, health and happiness. It’s important to understand, however, that the time spent on grooming can vary from one dog to another, even if they’re of the same breed. Here’s an overview of the factors involved.

Dog-related pricing factors

  1. Size: Larger dogs generally have more surface area to groom, which means longer grooming times.
  2. Coat type: Long-haired or curly dogs need more time to detangle.
  3. Coat condition: A matted, dirty or unkempt coat may require extra care.
  4. Activity level: Active dogs are more likely to get dirty quickly, requiring more frequent bathing and grooming.
  5. Age of dog: Puppies can be more difficult to groom because of their boundless energy and lack of patience.
  6. Dog health: Skin or health problems (old age, prosthesis, etc.) may require specific treatments that prolong grooming.
  7. Dog behaviour: A cooperative dog will make the process quicker and easier.
  8. Breed of dog: Each breed has its own specific grooming needs, depending on its coat and characteristics.
  9. Training level: A well-trained dog is more likely to remain calm during grooming.
  10. Sensitivity to allergies: Some dogs require the use of special products to avoid allergic reactions.
  11. Pre-brushing: Detangling the coat takes time, especially if knots have formed.

Price factors related to grooming

  1. Bath: The type of shampoo used and the thorough rinsing may vary according to the dog’s coat.
  2. Drying: Some dogs tolerate the dryer better than others, which can influence drying time.
  3. Claw trimming: Overly long claws require trimming, which can be more or less complicated depending on claw color.
  4. Ear cleaning: Some breeds have more sensitive ears that require special attention, such as ear hair removal.
  5. Eye cleaning: Ocular secretions need to be treated, but this can vary according to breed, as brachycephalic dogs have folds that need to be cleaned more carefully.
  6. Hair trimming: Grooming can include breed-specific hair trimming, which can be more or less complex.
  7. Dental hygiene: Scaling is a part of grooming that’s not automatic, but can be done separately for less stress.
  8. Grooming the paws: Pads need to be clipped, which may take longer if knots have formed. Essential for your dog’s well-being!
  9. Perfume: Some owners choose to add a dog perfume, but this can be optional depending on preference.

Indicative grooming price estimates

  • Labrador Retriever

Approx. 1 to 3 hours. They have a short coat, but they like water, which can prolong the bath.

  • Yorkshire Terrier

Approx. 1h30 – 2h. Their coat needs regular brushing and trimming. Some are patient, others much less so.

  • Golden Retriever

Approx. 1 – 3 hrs. Their coat needs thorough brushing to avoid tangles, especially under the belly. Their vigor will depend on this brushing. Tight knots can hurt the skin and make them less lively.

  • Bulldog

Approx. 45min – 1h. Short hair grows as fast as long hair, but falls out faster. Hence the need for a monthly peel. Facial folds also need to be cleaned.

  • German Shepherd

Approx. 1 – 2.5 hours. Regular brushing keeps their coat in good condition. Bathing is not always necessary.

  • Shih Tzu

Approx. 1h30 – 2h. Their long, silky coat requires meticulous care.

  • Chihuahua

Approx. 1 hour. Their short coats require little care, but their eyes and teeth need cleaning.
